Terrace awning for a detached house in Cologne
The owners of a detached house in Cologne have fitted their terrace with a Plaza Viva pergola awning from weinor. The awning blends unobtrusively into the overall look of the façade and helps to cool the interior.
When the client couple moved into the architect's house in the west of Cologne around three years ago, they were delighted with the quiet location, the spacious interior design and the sunny garden with terrace. However, it soon became apparent that the sunny terrace also had its downsides. Without protection from above, it wasn't just the stone slabs outside that heated up. The indoor areas also quickly absorbed the heat on warm days and made it uncomfortable to stay there, despite the external blinds. Sunshades did not provide the desired cooling effect and did not fulfil the family's aesthetic requirements in any way.
Sturdy pergola awning as weather protection
So they looked around for alternatives. A neighbour who had bought an awning for his patio put them in touch with weinor's specialist partner Rolladen Handel Porz. Among other things, the company specialises in sun protection systems for both old and new buildings. However, the first favoured solution, a normal awning from weinor, was out of the question for structural reasons. As the Cologne family wanted to shade a very large area on their terrace, the awning would have been too heavy. The façade would not have been able to bear the load. As an alternative, the specialist company recommended a pergola awning. Two posts at the front of the awning ensure a high level of stability. The Plaza Viva is also suitable for use in light rain. This is ensured by a lowerable post. The resulting slope allows rainwater to drain away reliably and prevents unsightly water pockets from forming and distorting the awning fabric. "At first, I was worried that the awning posts would spoil the overall look of the house," says the client. However, the weinor specialist partner was quickly able to refute this objection. One of the posts was to be placed so close to the house wall that it was hardly noticeable. In addition, weinor is able to produce frames and posts in many different colours thanks to its own powder coating. As a result, the design of the two posts of the awning in the chosen colour slate grey perfectly matches the window profiles of the building.
VarioShade valance and LED lighting complement the sun shading system
Before making a final decision, the couple wanted to see the Plaza Viva awning in its original form. They only had to travel a few kilometres to do so, as manufacturer weinor presents its patio roofs, conservatories and awnings in their original size in a showroom covering over 1,000 square metres in Cologne-Ossendorf. There they were quickly impressed by the quality and sophisticated design of the awning they wanted. They were also impressed by the additional functions. The pergola awning can be supplemented with a VarioShade valance. It is attached to the front of the front profile and offers protection against the low sun as well as privacy. This is ideal for builders, as the garden is right next to the next house. The VarioShade valance therefore guarantees a reliable level of privacy. "In the weinor showroom, we were also shown the LED lighting with dimming function integrated into the cassette of the awning. As we like to spend a lot of time on our patio in the evenings, I didn't need much convincing to fit our new awning with it," recalls the lady of the house. So the decision was made, and only a short time later the fitters from Rolladen Handel Porz had fitted the terrace with the Plaza Viva awning. The design of the awning was also chosen to match the house façade. A light grey mottled fabric in a plain colour was exactly the right shade.
Satisfied owners
The new owners of a pergola awning can no longer imagine their patio without the sun protection. "We've had a lot of hot days recently. I just leave the awning extended all the time. This has made staying indoors much more bearable, especially for our baby," says the young mum happily. "The Plaza Viva also fits in perfectly with the look of our house. Everything looks like one unit. The design is very important to me and I wouldn't have thought that the pergola awning with the two posts would fit so wonderfully into the overall look." She is also very satisfied with her weinor specialist partner Rolladen Handel Porz. "He was very responsive to our individual needs and gave us excellent advice. Now we can really spend a lot more time outside on the patio, even when it rains a little. Design, function, quality, advice: everything is just right here!"
