Patio roof for a detached house in Gescher
By combining a stylish glass oasis with a high-quality patio roof, a family in Gescher has significantly extended their living space and created an inviting, spacious outdoor area. The glass oasis blends seamlessly into the existing architecture and allows the family to enjoy the outdoors at any time of year without having to compromise on comfort. The flexible sliding glass walls are particularly practical. They offer optimum protection from wind and rain and at the same time create a light-flooded, open ambience.
The owner family of six fulfilled a long-cherished dream in 2014 by building a cosy brick house. However, they initially had to make compromises when it came to protecting the outdoor area from the weather. They made do with a parasol, but this quickly faltered in the wind and did not provide enough shade. "Someone was always sitting in the sun," reports the owner. This turned out not to be a good solution for larger birthday parties and family cafés. In addition, the windy, south-west-facing location was often too hot during the day and too cold in the evening. "We wanted to use the space more beautifully and sensibly," reports the owner, "so ten years later we decided to do it again."
Additional living space
Now you can access the light-flooded glass oasis directly from the living area - a cold conservatory from the manufacturer Weinor, which consists of a Terrazza Pure glass patio roof measuring 4.5 x 4 metres with flexible sliding glass walls. This is where the whole family meets at the large wooden table to eat, play and chat together. The abundance of light makes the room feel like an outdoor area, but the all-round weather protection and shading make it as cosy as a living room.
Another reason for the extension: "Our house is very open-plan, which feels spacious, but with four children it can get quite noisy," laughs the owner. "Now my wife and I just retreat to the glass oasis, close the door and enjoy the peace and quiet."
Façade appearance from a single mould
The owner attached great importance to an aesthetic design. "We had channelled a lot of creativity into the planning of the house, so we wanted to preserve and enhance the beautiful view from the garden side." A patio roof with a modern, cubic look was to form an interesting contrast to the classic design of the house and also pick up on the look of the wood-clad façade of the front building. After visiting several weather protection providers who were unable to fulfil his wish, the owner had a stroke of luck with Weinor specialist dealer WIRO in Gescher. "We'll do it!" came the prompt reply from WIRO Managing Director Jan Herbstmann. Once the cubic patio roof had been erected, the weather protection expert fitted a wooden fascia made of larch to the guttering, creating a uniform overall look.
The unusual timber design is made possible by the great adaptability of the patio roofs from manufacturer Weinor. It is a good example of how glass canopies from industrial production can also be easily supplemented with customised elements. This allows the outdoor product to blend in even more harmoniously with the architecture of the building.
There were also clear wishes in terms of colour. With the "Sparkling Iron" frame colour from the same manufacturer, the patio cover now matches the shade of the window frames exactly. "The colour is characterised by a textured surface, which is less sensitive to soiling than a conventional high-gloss paint," explains Jan Herbstmann.
Uncomplicated installation
"The installation went really well," reports the weather protection expert, "the assembly went like clockwork." After a garden and landscaping contractor had poured the foundations, the aluminium roofing was erected and the rails for the sliding doors were installed. The landscaper then laid the ceramic tiles and WIRO installed the sliding glass doors. "The work went hand in hand," says Herbstmann.
Cubic design and high load-bearing capacity
The cubic design of the patio roofing without a visible slope appealed to the owners. There is an ingenious technical detail behind the linear design: the glass elements rest in the horizontal roof beams on an integrated support with a slight gradient that is invisible from the outside. This not only creates the characteristic cubic appearance, but also reliably drains away rainwater. An additional advantage of the high-quality construction is its particular stability, making it ideally equipped even for heavy snow loads.
Outdoor seating area flooded with light
The sliding glass elements around the dining area, which do not have any vertical profiles, allow the family to enjoy an unobstructed view of the garden and the surrounding area. This allows you to experience the outdoor feeling even when the weather is not so favourable. When the temperatures are pleasant, all the fronts can be opened to create an outdoor seating area in the fresh air.
Practical roofing over the paths
To create even more sheltered outdoor space, the area between the glass oasis and the garage was also covered with a glass patio roof from Weinor. It spans an area of 3.5 by 2.7 metres and is flush with the adjoining garage. This allows the family to get to the car without getting wet. Another plus: "Thanks to the second patio roof, we can now host large parties outside," says the owner.
Sun protection and privacy thanks to shade providers
If it gets too sunny on the patio, the family simply extend the under-glass awning and the vertical shading with the transparent fibreglass screens. Together, they prevent the cold conservatory from heating up and provide reliable protection from the sun's blinding rays. The vertical awnings also provide more privacy by protecting the family from prying eyes.
The building work has more than paid off for the owner family. The homeowner puts it in a nutshell: "We are extremely happy with our new outdoor area."
