Patio roof for the ASV Köln sports club
The traditional club ASV Köln has equipped the rear of its sports hall with a glass oasis® from weinor. The 150 square metre transparent conservatory serves as a weather-protected lounge and waiting area for club members and spectators at sporting events.
The ASV Köln sports hall has a glamorous past behind it. In the 1980s, the basketball players of BSC Saturn Köln celebrated four German championships and three cup victories here. in 2014, Cologne basketball returned to the modernised hall for a year and a half with the RheinStars. This is not the only reason why the sports centre is so popular. ASV Köln offers its members a varied programme of courses, some of which also take place in the hall. It is also rented by other Cologne clubs.
Upgrading the outdoor area
ASV Köln can't complain about a lack of use - on the contrary. So they thought about what structural measures could be taken to further enhance the hall. It quickly became clear that a sheltered conservatory at the west end of the hall would bring many advantages. Parents can pass the time here while they wait for their children to play sport. At events such as summer parties or other sporting events, this area would be ideal as a place to sit and enjoy a Kölsch beer together over a cosy chat in the conservatory.
Winter garden with LED lighting
In close cooperation with the ASV club management, Weinor developed a concept for utilising the western entrance area regardless of the weather. A 6 x 25 metre glass roof construction with aluminium roof beams was used, which rests on a total of eight support posts. The glass elements are fitted with a ventilation function at the wall connection for fire protection reasons. At the front, the terrace roof was closed with glass substructure elements. The seven w17-c units, each with three panes, are easy to open and have a catch function that allows all panes to slide simultaneously. This ensures sufficient cooling air even on hot summer days. The result is a spacious, transparent conservatory that lets in plenty of natural daylight. To ensure that it can also be used in the dark, the roof beams were fitted with 14 LED light strips, each with ten spotlights. They bathe the interior in a warm, atmospheric light.
Hurdles mastered during planning and installation
The weinor installation team had to overcome several challenging tasks during preparation and realisation. For example, the wall of the sports hall is made of aerated concrete, for which no documentation was available from the construction period. Therefore, the lowest load-bearing capacity had to be assumed. To secure the roof construction, the wall connection also had to run around several reinforced concrete supports. A 400 mm wide aluminium plate was attached behind the wall connection to transfer the load into the wall at around 200 fixing points. The roof could then be attached to this. During assembly, the fact that access to the construction site was only possible with a limited axle load and the components had to be reloaded onto a telescopic handler at the edge of the sports field made things even more difficult. As the ground work under the roof system had not yet been completed, it was not possible to use a glass lift. So only manual glazing was an option. The 100 or so roof panes were therefore transported to their place of use using muscle power.
The effort was worth it and the result is impressive. The result is a transparent, high-quality conservatory that significantly enhances the sports hall and opens up additional space. ASV President Walter Bungard is delighted: "Great facility, lots of space - with the conservatory from weinor, we can really offer our members added value. It is a further component of numerous measures with which ASV Köln is emphasising its leading role as one of the oldest and most popular sports clubs in the cathedral city."
